To the Market
The farmers' markets are getting back into full Spring/Summer swing, and we love them. We were regulars at the Staunton/Augusta Farmers Market when we lived on the other side of the mountain and we still visit periodically, and the City Market is all kinds of awesome (albeit crowded, and I never manage to get there early enough to beat the crowds). Last weekend, we decided to stop by Nelson Farmers' Market for the first time. That was a good call!
Nelson's Farmers' Market has everything we look for in a farmer's market:
Plenty of great, fresh produce and plants for the garden
Handmade goods
Music
And, SUPER PRIORITY: Baked Goods
I unfortunately don't know this gal's name, but I can tell you a couple of things about her:
1. She has an adorable baby.
2. As someone who participated in last Fall's Crozet Art Show with a babe on my hip, she also has great tenacity. The moxie it takes to schlep all of your goods, schlep your baby, deal with customers, and deal with baby, not to mention make all of those goodies is totally impressive.
3. One variety of the said goodies is apple turnovers. This was perhaps the best apple turnover I've ever had the pleasure of eating. Light, flaky, perfect amount of apple, perfect level of sweetness. If you're strolling by her tent at the Nelson Farmers' Market and you wonder if you should purchase an apple turnover, the answer is: No. You should purchase eight. You also may want to buy some of her other delicious treats, but that should be in addition to the eight apple turnovers you've also bought.
Bonus: they also have Trager Brothers Coffee. Dig it.
If you're lucky enough to live in an area with a Farmers' Market, get out and see all the wonderful things they have to offer. Support your local farmers and craftspeople. Enjoy great food and a sense of community.
